We spend about twenty five years of our lives in bed. It makes sense to buy a good one.
Beds are low priority items in most homes. The money saved on cheap, half priced beds, bought in the January sales, is paid back many times over in later life. The rise in the number of osteopaths, chiropractors and physiotherapists over recent years relates in part to the problems caused by sleeping on poor quality, unsupportive beds. Sleep is probably the most important thing we do for good health. Our wellbeing, our ability to function during the day, our mood and personality are very much affected by our quantity and quality of sleep.
And yet few people think about sleep until their health or work suffers. Poor sleep is a major stress on the body affecting all the organs and systems of the body, such as blood pressure and the immune system. Of course it lowers energy levels, increases tiredness and is related to depression. We could fill pages about the research done over the past fifty years relating to sleep and health.
If you have time, have a look at the Sleep Encyclopedia by Jes Gerlach.
Diet and exercise are important but without quality sleep your health will suffer. Without energy it is difficult to exercise. Sleep boosts energy levels and lowers blood pressure. Lack of sleep reduces the production of growth hormone that helps control the bodies proportion of fat and muscle leading, to weight gain in middle age. Take our word for it, improving your quality of sleep is the single most important thing you can do, for your health and wellbeing. We have over twenty years of feedback from customers whose lives have improved from improving their quality of sleep.
Many things affect your ability to sleep well. The qualities of your bed directly affect your quality of sleep.
Beds have changed very little over the years. Whether you buy cheap or the dearest pocket sprung mattress, you still sleep on springs, padding and ticking. Springs push back. The heavier you are and the firmer the mattress the greater the pressure points. Ideally a bed should give even support and allow you to sleep in any position. Unfortunately the high pressure points on your hips and shoulders do not allow you to hold a comfortable position for long. Few people can sleep on their back for long due to poor support to the lower back., most will sleep on their side. To ease pressure points on your shoulders and hips, you go into the recovery position with your spine twisted. Your brain receives messages from the muscles and nerves in your lower back and from the restriction of blood flow to arms and legs and you turn over. Too soft a bed and the springs will lose tension and you end up lying in a pit, too firm and you toss and turn. Temperature plays a major part in the way we sleep. If the bedroom is cool you lose body heat through the mattress and bedding into the room and your metabolism drops. It’s why it takes a couple of minutes to get going on a winters morning. In the summer the bedroom is hot, the mattress acts as a barrier and it is difficult to lose heat. Too hot or too cold, you go into longer periods of shallower sleep, you may awaken and then take longer to get off to sleep. If you wake up tired and stiff, you need change the way you sleep.
So what about Memory Foam and denser foam beds. We can only pass on comments from customers who bought these beds before changing to a waterbed. They say that the softer memory foam beds don’t always keep their shape whilst the firmer foam beds can be quite hard. The most common comment is that the beds are too hot. Foam is a poor conductor of body heat.
Then there is sleep hygiene. You share your bed with millions of dust mites, who happily chomp away on your discarded skin and perspiration. The excreta from these wee beasties is breathed into your lungs, eyes and onto your skin, when you turn in bed. Add to this the litre of sweat we each lose at night and your mattress soon becomes a reservoir of mould, spores, bacteria and viruses. Studies show that foam beds can allow a build up of dust and mites because they do not breathe like a sprung mattress. Bad news if you are asthmatic, have dust allergies, eczema or breathing problems.and an unhealthy sleeping environment for every one else. Sleep hygiene is very important for good health, particularly for the young.
What’s all the fuss about?
Our customers are amazed how comfortable and supportive our beds are and once they have adjusted to a different way of sleeping and “would never go back to an ordinary bed.”
Get into one of our beds and instantly the bed moulds to your shape. Only water can move out of the way, drastically reducing pressure points to hips and shoulders while giving good support to the lower back. With our wide range of mattresses you can choose to have some relaxing motion or choose a fully stabilised mattress. Whether you are five stone or fifty the bed fits you like a glove. You set your ideal sleeping temperature,so you go to sleep very quickly, usually within a minute or two. Turning in bed is minimal. With the fully stabilised and dual mattresses you will not disturb your partner when you do turn over. Dual mattresses also allow you both to set different sleeping temperatures.
Instead of you try to hold a comfortable position for as long as possible. The bed holds you so you can completely relax. Being on a water mattress you weigh less!.With the lower pressure points and good support the spine is more relaxed. Being able to relax in comfort ensures even sleep, with longer periods of deep sleep which the body needs to maintain good health. Also temperature control improves circulation and so you wake up more awake! We kid you not.! If all this sounds too good to be true, it’s better. Read the testimonials, we have many more on display in the shop.
One reads “ Having been in the bedding trade for around twenty years and had a succession of so called backcare beds. I changed to a waterbed about ten years ago. UNBELIEVABLE!. These beds are amazing. So many benefits. Anything else is second rate.
