About us

We are a family business. I'm Brian and I run the business with my wife Val and the help of my sons, when we're busy. In 1984/5 I was training as a physiotherapist. I suffered back pain from lifting heavy patients and further injured my back falling off a ladder, twice! It put an end to my career as a physio. After two years of pain and struggling to get any decent sleep, I got a very basic waterbed. Something I'd always fancied from the 60's. The change was dramatic. The pain eased, I was mobile and sleeping wonderfully. The pain only returned when I slept on an ordinary bed. If you read some of the medical testimonials you'll see the same story. Touch wood, I've always enjoyed good health despite working long hours. Something I put down to good sleep and my wife's excellent cooking!

In 1987 we opened our shop and have been waterbed specialists ever since.

After many years based at the Trago Mills Shopping Centre at Newton Abbot, we are now in a larger shop in the Guildhall Shopping Centre, in the centre of Exeter. We now display the full range of Akva waterbeds, water cots, water pillows and accessories. We are main stockists for Akva waterbeds in the southwest. We also stock replacement mattresses , heaters, covers and accessories for other makes of divan (soft side) waterbeds and framed (hardside) beds and accessories.

The Back Centre, IvybridgeWe aim to be friendly and helpful, the beds sell themselves. We are here to explain the options, so that you can choose the right bed for your needs. Unfortunately, we don't have the space to stock chairs and other back care products, but we recommend The Back Centre at Ivybridge who have a wide range on display, and like us are friendly, helpful and knowlegable.

When you read the benefits below and the testimonials, you will see how much better sleep can be, for many years to come.  A third of your life sorted and the days are better too!

IT IS A GOOD DEAL!!

So why choose a Waterbed?

The obvious reason is better sleep and so better health and wellbeing. The unique benefits of a good quality waterbed allow you the best opportunity to truly relax and enjoy rejuvenating healthy sleep.

An obvious concern is good back support. The ideal would be to have the spine supported in its natural curve without any pressure points, with no pressure on the spinal column and radiating nerves and with the back muscles relaxed. The firmer the bed, the higher the pressure points, the more stress to the spine.

Sleeping in a floatation tank is not a practical solution! Sleeping on a waterbed is sometimes called floatation sleep, because of the lower pressure points, exceptional support and the semi weightless feeling of being on a water mattress.

In this country few people would ever consider a waterbed. Few bed stores stock them, a pocket sprung or foam bed is a much easier sale, quicker to install and probably more profitable. Many would imagine they were too heavy, wobbly and liable to leak! Nothing could be further from the truth. Waterbeds have changed dramatically over the past forty years with better design, materials and the development of fully stabilised and lumbar support mattresses. Now more therapists, especially those trained abroad, recognise their unique healthcare and back care benefits.

For a more detailed list of benefits, see THE MAIN BENEFITS below.

Why choose an Akva waterbed?

 * Their mattresses use a better quality, environmentally friendly vinyl that lasts longer than standard waterbed vinyl and is laminated to further reduce any chance of leakage.

 * Their low energy heaters feature dual operation so that you can operate a daytime only, or normal 24 hour operation. An Akva divan waterbed uses no more energy than a standard fridge, rated Class A and is classified as a low energy product.

* The entire bed is made at their factory to ensure best quality control.

Why buy from us?

To be frank there are few waterbed stockists and so you are not spoilt for choice! Even so we go to great lengths to offer, best quality, best service and good value for money.

It obviously makes sense to buy locally and from a specialist. That way you get a good choice, with the right options for you and reliable ongoing service

If you buy on price alone you may end up with a poor quality product and problems later on. We often end up having to replace mattresses, covers or heaters for people who bought on price, but could not get any after service when they needed it. In the end they paid twice over. If you need us, we do our best to help. We have been looking after our customers throughout the Westcountry for more than twenty years.

 THE MAIN BENEFITS

*Total body and back support.

Whatever your body shape, size or weight, a waterbed mattress moulds to your body. Because only water can move out of the way to take your shape, pressure points are low, making the bed wonderfully comfortable and supportive. Water also supports your body weight so you weigh less on a water mattress!

You don’t hold a position, the bed holds you, so that you can completely relax and hold a more natural sleeping position for much longer. By adjusting the amount of water you can change the firmness of the bed as with an air bed. If you choose a fully stabilised mattress, turning and getting off the bed will be as easy as on a conventional bed.

It is the combination of excellent support, pressure off the joints, relaxed muscles, better sleeping position, temperature control and good circulation, that benefit so many medical condtions including aching backs!

*Precise temperature control

All waterbeds have a thermostat, and heating pad set beneath the mattress and liner. They are far more sophisicated (and safer!) than electric blankets. You set your ideal sleeping temperature, so that as soon as you get into bed, you are relaxed and ready for sleep. You can set any temperature, so cold rooms in winter or hot summers nights have little effect on your sleep. With the dual systems you can each set your own sleeping temperature.

Your bed is aired, so no getting into cold beds, messing about with electric blankets, and  waking up in the middle of the night because you are cold or too hot. Maintaining a constant comfortable sleeping temperature ensures that you get off to sleep quickly and enjoy longer periods of deep sleep which you body needs to maintain good health.  You also wake up feeling more awake and refreshed. Really!

Having had a waterbed for so many years I still enjoy getting into a cosy bed in winter and not having to struggle in the summer with hot sticky nights.

*Total hygiene

Bed salesman rarely mention hygiene because beds are very unhygienic. When you are cold or too hot you perspire. You lose around a half litre of sweat each night into your mattress.

Conventional mattresses are warm, moist and full of discarded skin flakes, viruses, bacteria, moulds and spores. Ideal breeding grounds for a million or more dust mites and other beasties. When you move in bed you breath all this into your mouth, nose, eyes and onto the skin.

This can cause allergic reactions, such as an asthmatic attack, inflammation of the lining of the lungs and bronchial tubes, reddening itchy eyes and itching and eczema of the skin.

Studies show that foam beds can hold up to four times more skin and moisture due to the nature of foam and difficulties with ventilation. Foam is also a good insulator. We get a lot of people who complain of getting too hot, especially in sunmmer. Not ideal!

Dead skin is a rich source of bacteria and when added to viruses, fungal spores and mould make your old bed the last place to be when you are ill. Turning mattresses, vacuuming and airing the bed have a limited effect.

If you are one of the 85% of asthmatics who are allergic to dust mites or suffer other allergic reactions that worsen at night, seriously consider changing to a waterbed. We have many customers whose symptoms have disappeared at night, because waterbeds are so much more cleaner and drier than conventional beds and free of dust mites. You'll see some customer comments, in medical testimonials - Eczema & Asthma

By controlling the temperature you reduce the amount you perspire. The slight warmth of the bed airs the bedding during the day, so that you can get into clean dry aired bed each night, year after year

Our waterbeds have zip off washable covers ( and can be washed to 95 degrees ). Our best selling cover has a membrane underneath so when washed all dust is removed and you don’t even need to wipe over the mattress. We recommend you buy a spare cover with your bed . With the larger beds choose a split cover for ease of washing.

Total hygiene is one of the many benefits that improve sleep and good health for everyone

Durability

With other beds finding the right one for you is more luck than judgement. You try a few, listen to the salesman and make your choice. If it is comfortable OK, if not it goes in the spare room and you try again. As time goes on the bed changes, you change, the bed no longer fits and your sleep suffers until you are sleeping so badly you have to go and buy another bed.

Our beds always fit perfectly. If you change weight over the years, you can easily adjust the amount of water to compensate. A waterbed in five or ten years time should be as clean, comfortable and supportive as new.The mattress vinyl does however change over time, so we recommend you replace the mattress after eight to ten years. Many of my customers have had their beds for twenty years or more. They enjoy the same quality of sleep summer and winter, year after year and “Would never go back to an ordinary bed”

Any disadvantages?

To be honest there is one. They obviously take longer to move than ordinary beds.

Draining and filling a waterbed is fairly straightforward. You get a booklet with the bed and many people do it themselves, we are happy to give advice. If you would rather we did it, give us a call. One good thing is that our beds breakdown into easily transportable parts and will fit through tight spaces that would defeat a standard bed.
