Frequently Asked Questions

For those who are unfamiliar with modern waterbeds there are natural concerns.

  1. Are waterbeds safe?

    Of course they are!

We are not in business to make people suffer, quite the reverse.

In this country people have always viewed waterbeds with suspicion, though few have actually tried one. Regular bed shops generally avoid them, a pocket sprung or foam bed is a much easier sale. They have stayed the preserve of specialist retailers like us and back care centres.

In many countries they have gained a reputation, especially in Europe & Scandinavia, for the many healthcare benefits and the superior quality of sleep... With the increase in popularity investment went in to develop new materials and better design.

AKVA our main supplier based in Denmark is now Scandinavia’s largest manufacturer of high quality waterbeds.

  2. Will a waterbed leak?

Today waterbed mattresses are manufactured to the highest standards. AKVA mattresses use laminated vinyl and come with a five year manufacturer's warranty.

They are made to give you many years of comfort and support and short of wilful damage rarely leak. In the event of a pinhole any water is held within the safety liner. The mattress can be easily repaired with a vinyl patch, normally without the need to drain the bed.

  3. What about the weight of a waterbed?

A modern divan waterbed is much lighter than the early framed beds. All waterbeds are supplied with special bases that spread the load evenly over a wide area, making them far lighter, per square foot, than a bath.

We have been fitting beds since 1987, many in static caravans, old cottages, pubs and farmhouses. We have never had a problem. If a floor meets minimum building standards it will easily support a waterbed.

  4. Will I be seasick on a waterbed?

Early waterbeds were simply bags of water with full motion. Over the years baffles and fibre were added to restrict movement. The most popular mattresses today have little or no motion. They simply contour to your body without pressure points, reducing the need to toss and turn, so you tend to move less often on a waterbed.

A fully stabilised mattress ensures virtually no motion between partners.

A dual mattress guarantees that no motion is transferred between partners.

  5. Don't I need a firm bed for my back?

We have had many years of firm orthopedic type beds and yet most people still suffer bad backs. We cannot relax and be comfortable on a hard surface. Nor should we sleep on a soft bed that does not give good support.

Springs and foam are compressed particularly by the shoulders and hips. The firmer the mattress the more you toss and turn to ease the pressure points.

Water simply moves out of the way giving a more even pressure along the body and giving extra support to the lower back. It also allows you to fully relax and keep a comfortable sleeping position throughout the night.

The firmness can be adjusted simply by adding or removing water.

It is this combination of pressure off the joints, relaxed muscles, good circulation and excellent support that eases most hip, back and shoulder problems.

  6. Do waterbeds need a lot of maintenance?

When we deliver and install your bed we will give you a free care kit and manual. We will show you how to look after and adjust your bed for maximum comfort and support.

A waterbed needs little maintenance. To keep it clean simply wipe over the mattress with the cleaner provided when you wash the zip off cover.

Once a year add a bottle of waterbed conditioner to keep the water fresh.

We will send you a yearly reminder and post it to you. That’s it other than possibly adjusting the temperature with the four seasons.

  7. What about the costs of running a waterbed?

Once you have bought the bed costs are minimal. A few pence a day to heat the bed. A covered waterbed losses little heat.  Any heat lost airs the bedding, allowing you to get into a clean aired bed every night.

A yearly bottle of conditioner to keep the water clean is £10.00
Waterbeds are very durable. The mattresses do not give or sag.

The hygiene, comfort and support remain constant. The vinyl does however slowly age and we recommend changing the mattress every ten years. The cost of a new mattress and safety liner is around £250 to £350.00.

In the twenty years that we have specialised in waterbeds we have seen waterbed prices increase by around 25%, well below the level of inflation.

They compare in price, very favourably with ‘good quality’ conventional and foam beds

A few tips

We believe that choosing one of our waterbeds will improve often dramatically, your quality of sleep.

As with all beds choose as large a waterbed as you can accommodate. If you have the space - go for it. We don’t charge much more for the bigger waterbeds and we can supply any size bedding.

Always choose on quality not price. Waterbed users often keep their beds for many years, so choose with care. As with all things there are poor quality, good quality and best quality goods on the market. We only sell best quality and provide the service to go with it. We look after our customers.

Waterbeds compare very favourably in price with “good quality” conventional and foam beds, and yet offer so many extra benefits. So we recommend you pay that little extra to make sure you get the best quality and service, and a bed you will love for many years to come.
